Vietnam’s Timber Industry Strives to Break Free from the "Profit via Cheap Labor" Predicament

Vietnam’s Timber Industry Strives to Break Free from the "Profit via Cheap Labor" Predicament

May 15, 2026

The Secretary-General of the Vietnam Forestry Association explicitly pointed out when discussing the development path of local wood product enterprises that the future development of Vietnam’s wood product manufacturers should center on a ten-year industrial transformation. They must move beyond the simple original equipment manufacturing (OEM) model and upgrade to original design manufacturing (ODM) and original brand manufacturing (OBM). This strategic shift aims to seize the initiative in product design and gain brand discourse power, which is also the key for Vietnam’s timber industry to break through its development bottlenecks.

Timber industry challenges in Vietnam

For a long time, Vietnam’s timber industry has relied entirely on low-cost labor to secure meager profit margins. Against this backdrop, a thought-provoking question arises: As emerging economies continue to rise, will Vietnam be replaced, lose its current market advantages, and relinquish its core position in the global timber industry?

This issue requires an objective perspective from the lens of global industrial relocation. Looking back four to five decades ago, developed economies in Europe and elsewhere took the initiative to relocate labor-intensive industries such as timber manufacturing overseas to prioritize the development of high-value-added sectors, triggering multiple rounds of regional shifts in the global timber industry.

Sustainable practices in Vietnam's timber industry

The industry initially migrated from European and American markets to Northeast Asia and Southeast Asia. Amid this ongoing industrial relocation wave, China and Vietnam have evolved into the two core hubs of the global timber industry to date. Statistics show that Vietnam’s total furniture export value alone is more than twice the combined timber export value of all other ASEAN countries, fully demonstrating its pivotal status in the global timber sector.

However, this scale advantage does not mean Vietnam dominates the industry, nor has it pulled the sector out of its predicament. Beneath the apparent export prosperity lies a hidden concern: the industry has long remained trapped in low-end processing segments. The timber industry cannot be treated as a mere cash cow. Without upgrading to high-end links including design, branding and distribution, Vietnam’s timber industry will remain in a passive and disadvantaged position forever. Therefore, the transformation over the next decade is not an option but a necessity for the industry’s survival.

Economic impact of timber industry reforms

In fact, Vietnam’s timber industry has long been at the international forefront in terms of regulatory compliance and sustainable development. Vietnam has signed and strictly implemented the Voluntary Partnership Agreement/Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade (VPA/FLEGT) with the European Union, and is actively preparing to comply with the EU Deforestation-Free Products Regulation (EUDR). Through concrete actions, it has demonstrated its resolve to align with high international standards and uphold legal and sustainable development practices.

Nevertheless, this edge remains underrecognized by the global market. It is imperative for the government to lead enhanced national-level external communication and send a clear message to major global markets: Vietnamese wood products are not only price-competitive but also trustworthy in terms of timber legality and sustainable forest management.

Market trends in Vietnam's timber industry

Furthermore, formulating a national-level brand strategy for the timber industry has become an urgent priority. Vietnam needs to redefine its industrial positioning, strive to escape the "profit via cheap labor" trap, and build an industrial brand image that integrates quality, design and social responsibility, establishing Vietnam’s timber industry as a symbol of high quality and accountability across the global marketplace.

Union Wood maintains extremely thin average profit margins on its cabinetry supply, doing so to offer favorable terms to cabinet wholesalers, contractors and real estate developers. Even so, our product quality remains consistent, with our manufacturing standards growing increasingly stringent year by year. We are a highly reliable partner, especially favored by consumers in the United States and other global markets. Only through coordinated efforts and rapid action by enterprises alongside the government can Vietnam’s timber industry achieve genuine transformation and upgrading, strengthen its core competitiveness, and gain a firm foothold amid the fluctuations of the global market.
