Vietnam's Ambition: Achieve a 35% Increase in Timber Exports Over the Next Five Years

Jan 30, 2026

Vietnam has recently set a target for the next five years, aiming to achieve an export revenue of 25 billion US dollars from timber and timber products by 2030. In 2025, the country's export value of such products reached 18.5 billion US dollars, representing a year-on-year growth of 6.6%. If this growth trend continues, the target is highly likely to be achieved within the next five years. An average annual growth rate of 5% to 6% by 2030 will translate into a cumulative increase of approximately 35%.

Furniture Drives Export Growth

The year 2025 marked a significant milestone for Vietnam's timber industry, as exports of wooden furniture surpassed 10 billion US dollars for the first time, accounting for nearly 60% of the total annual export value of the sector. This figure fully demonstrates the effectiveness of the industry's transformation, which is shifting from low-value raw materials and semi-processed products to the manufacturing of finished goods with higher profit margins and stronger brand influence.

In addition, several sub-sectors recorded export values exceeding 1 billion US dollars. Specifically, wood chip exports reached 2.2 billion US dollars, exports of timber, panels and flooring amounted to 2.1 billion US dollars, and wood pellet exports stood at 1.1 billion US dollars. These figures reflect the relatively diversified export structure of Vietnam's timber industry.

High Dependence on the US, but Diversification Accelerating

In 2025, the United States remained the largest export market for Vietnam's timber and timber products, with shipments totaling 9.46 billion US dollars, a year-on-year increase of 4.4%, accounting for roughly 55% of the industry's total export volume. Vietnam has further consolidated its position as a major supplier of wooden furniture to the US market.

In the first eight months of 2025, the US market share rose from 40.5% in the same period of 2024 to 45.3%, while China's market share dropped sharply from 15.7% to 10.4% during the same timeframe.

Notably, exports to Japan in 2025 surged by over 23% year-on-year to 2.15 billion US dollars, breaking the 2-billion-dollar mark for the first time. As a result, Japan surpassed China to become Vietnam's second-largest export destination for timber products. Overall, the three major markets of the United States, Japan and China collectively account for nearly 80% of Vietnam's total timber and timber product exports, with other markets remaining relatively small in scale.

Trade Surplus and Forestry Foundation

In 2025, Vietnam's trade surplus in timber and forestry products reached nearly 14.9 billion US dollars, making it one of the industries with the highest trade surplus among Vietnam's export-oriented sectors. The output value of the forestry industry grew by 5.8% this year, exceeding the annual target of around 3%.

Vietnam has also made positive progress in the protection and management of forestry resources. The national forest coverage rate has stabilized at approximately 42%, the number of forestry regulation violations decreased by 13.8% year-on-year, and the area affected by forest fires and other disasters was reduced by more than 10%. These data confirm that Vietnam's governance capacity in the field of sustainable forestry development is gradually improving.

Outlook for the Future

Amid the vigorous development of Vietnam's timber industry, Union Wood, a local kitchen cabinet enterprise, is embracing vast growth opportunities with a clear and promising development blueprint. As a kitchen cabinet supplier, the company has built a strong customer reputation in the North American market by leveraging Vietnam's mature timber supply chain, cost advantages and continuously upgraded production technologies, with products distributed across all states of the United States and its core competitiveness continuously highlighted. Meanwhile, we will continue to strengthen our own advantages, injecting stronger impetus into the upgrading of Vietnam's finished timber product exports.
