Vietnam's Total Import and Export Volume Breaks the 900 Billion US Dollar Mark for the First Time

Dec 26, 2025

On the afternoon of December 25, the General Department of Vietnam Customs held a commendation ceremony to celebrate Vietnam's total import and export volume reaching 900 billion US dollars for the first time, the highest level in history, which has become an important milestone in Vietnam's economic integration into the international community. According to the budget, the total import and export volume for the whole year of 2025 is expected to reach 920 billion US dollars, an increase of 16.9% compared with the previous year.

The efforts and hard work over the past year have finally borne fruit, which has helped Vietnam rank among the top 25 economies in the world in terms of total import and export volume. Data from the World Trade Organization (WTO) shows that Vietnam is currently ranked 21st and 20th globally in terms of exports and imports respectively, an increase of 11 and 12 places compared with ten years ago. Notably, Vietnam has maintained a merchandise trade surplus for ten consecutive years, which is expected to reach 21.2 billion US dollars this year.

In 2025, the total import and export volume of foreign-invested enterprises is also expected to exceed the 600 billion US dollar mark, accounting for 72% of the country's total import and export volume, and contributing 99% of the import and export growth. At present, Vietnam has established trade relations with more than 230 countries and regions around the world. The bilateral trade volume with the United States, a major trading partner, stands at 170 billion US dollars.

According to data from the General Department of Customs, between 2015 and 2024, Vietnam's cumulative total import and export volume of goods reached 5.52 trillion US dollars. In 2015, Vietnam's total import and export volume was only about 328 billion US dollars, and by 2024 it had increased to 786 billion US dollars, a 2.4-fold increase compared with 10 years ago. From December 22 to 26, 2025, Vietnam's total import and export volume officially exceeded the 900 billion US dollar mark.

Looking back at history, Vietnam's import and export trade has broken through several important milestones: it joined the WTO in 2007, with total import and export volume exceeding 100 billion US dollars; exceeded 200 billion US dollars in 2011; reached 300 billion US dollars in 2015; soared to 400 billion US dollars in 2017; broke through 500 billion US dollars in 2019; exceeded 700 billion US dollars in 2022; and set a new historical high of 900 billion US dollars in 2025.

At the commendation ceremony, Nguyen Van Tho, Director General of the General Department of Customs, pointed out that this achievement reconfirms that Vietnam is a highly open and deeply integrated economy, and a bright spot in regional and global trade. This is an important milestone, reflecting the outstanding efforts of the business community, and also proving the correctness of the Party's line, the decisive leadership of the government, and the coordinated participation of various ministries, sectors including the Ministry of Finance and the customs force.
